Programs within the Department
-
Adult Basic
Education (ABE)—Enrollees may be in
Basic Skills (0-5.9) or Pre-GED (6.0-8.9). These classes work on
improving basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, and
mathematics. The classes help students transition into GED classes.
-
General Educational
Development (GED)—Enrollees for GED classes (9.0 and above
in reading) are prepared for the GED test subjects, which are mathematics,
science, social studies, arts/literature, and writing skills.
-
English as a Second
Language (ESL)—This program is designed to help individuals
speak, read, and write the English language. It is a tuition-free,
part-time program for community residents.
-
Intensive English Language Program—The
Intensive English Language Program (IELP) is a special academic program
designed to serve students whose native language is not English and who are
interested in improving their English skills in order to enroll in college.
English skills at the high-intermediate level are the minimal competencies
expected for entry into the IELP. A separate assessment is required for
entry into the program. Tuition is charged for this program.
-
Workforce Development/Public Assistance Coordination—This
program works with adults who are receiving public assistance and need adult basic
education services. These services include not only the ABE/GED/ESL
classes, but also job skills training, and childcare and transportation
reimbursements.
