Underprepared Students Project Plans
2000-2002
5-A.
Colleges will conduct thorough
assessments of their current programs for underprepared students to determine
student success rates, program strengths, and program weaknesses.
MVCC Institutional Priority:
- Enhance programs and services for
underprepared students to improve their academic achievement, retention, and
readiness to attempt college level courses.
Outcomes:
-
Completed an
external analysis to identify the characteristics of underprepared students,
their needs and examples of successful programs. Completed a review of
current literature pertaining to underprepared students.

Completed an
internal analysis to identify all current programs available for
underprepared students. Reviewed MVCC research on the success and retention
rates for all students.

Developed college
definition of the underprepared student.

Completed a gap
analysis to define areas of focus for development of programs and services
for underprepared students.

Reviewed the
enrollment patterns in development education courses, including the ratio of
full time to adjunct faculty in developmental education. Added four full
time faculty positions to the department.

Hosted an
in-service day dedicated to the underprepared student including a
presentation by Alfredo de los Santos, Jr., and a panel discussion of
faculty and administrators. Engaged faculty in discussions about the
characteristics of underprepared student and their specific needs.

Assessed the
impact of participation in the COL-101 course on students' academic
performance and retention.

Developed an
assessment process for all developmental education courses.
