Instructions and Deadlines for Priority Consideration:

  • Transfer applicants must have all previous official college transcripts and final high school
    transcript or GED test results (including scores) sent.

  • One letter of recommendation from an instructor, guidance counselor or other individual
    who is qualified to comment on the applicant's potential to complete college level work
    in an arts and communications curriculum. Additional letters of recommendation are welcome.

  • Complete and return a required essay section on the application for admission

Standard Transfer Options to meet COLUMBIA General Education Requirements
  1. Transfer after completing Moraine Valley Community College's Associate in Arts (A.A.) or
    Associate in Science (A.S.) degree (note: the A.F.A. and A.A.S. do not meet this requirement).
    Students desiring to meet general education requirements through satisfactory completion of
    a Moraine Valley A.A. or A.S. degree should see the Columbia Transfer Guide found on http://www.colum.edu/Admissions/Transfer_Evaluation/PDF_Folder/LASpdf/morainelas05.pdf.

  2. Complete COLUMBIA General Education requirements. For students not planning to complete an      
    A.A./A.S. degree, but want to meet the COLUMBIA core requirements, a list of equivalent
    classes that can be transferred to Columbiato meet these requirements is available. Students
    transferring without an A.A./A.S. degree should try to complete as many of COLUMBIA's
    general education requirements as possible at Moraine Valley Community College.

Transfer Grade/Course Evaluation

IAI Course Acceptance

  • Columbia terminated participation in the IAI in May 2007. Rest
    assured that we will still evaluate transcripts course by course and give full
    transfer credit for IAI courses from other institutions pending the
    successful completion of the course with a “C” grade or better.
     

  • Beginning with students entering Columbia in Spring 2008, transfer
    courses must be completed with a “C” grade or better. This includes
    courses listed in various formal articulation agreements as well.
     

  • Columbia will consider transfer credit in a major subject from certain
    discipline-specific accredited institutions.

Maximum Credits Accepted
Columbia accepts a maximum of 88 credit hours in courses completed with a grade of "C" or better
from other regionally accredited colleges and universities. Transfer credit from any combination of
community college, Advanced Placement, CLEP, military and/or Life Experience is limited to a
maximum of 62 credit hours. If a student has attended both a four-year and a two-year college,
the maximum number of transfer credit hours accepted is 88. No more than 4 semester hours of
Physical Education and no more than 9 semester hours of foreign language will be accepted.

Deadline for Transfer Credit Submission
The acceptance of transfer credit is at the sole discretion of the College. To be accepted, transfer
credit must be received by the Office of Transfer Evaluation before the end of the student's first
semester of attendance at Columbia College. Students wishing transfer credit after matriculation
must submit such credit before the end of the student's next semester at Columbia.

Credit Not Accepted
Developmental, Adult Education, Continuing Education, ESL, Internships, Independent Study, Topics,
Workshop, or Seminar courses are not transferable. 

Notable COLUMBIA Graduation Requirements
  • The final 12 credit hours needed for graduation must be taken in residence at Columbia College Chicago.
