For majors in Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, Special Education, and Secondary Education

Transfer Admission Information

  • The Basic Skills Test should be completed prior to transfer and admission to the teacher education programs. Students should take the test during their second year at MVCC.

  • Students should be discouraged from taking content tests until after they transfer and near degree completion-especially after 2004.

  • Only one special education certificate is available at the undergraduate level- Learning and Behavior. The other disability programs, visual impairments and hearing impairments are not available at EIU, but are available at Northern Illinois University (Behavior and Learning and Vision Impairments) and Illinois State University (all three disabilities).

  • All teacher certification candidates are required to submit to a criminal background investigation at two points in their academic career: upon selection and prior to student teaching

  • *FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT FOR ALL EDUCATION MAJORS
    MVCC students should take (2) courses from one of the following language sequences:
    FRE/SPA/GER-101, 102, 201, 202
     
    Students who have completed two years of a single foreign language in high school with a grade of a "C" or better are exempt from the foreign language requirement. An additional semester will be required for students who have not met this requirement prior to EIU admission.

Admission Information
To be selected a student must:

  • Submit a formal application for University Admission to Teacher Education

  • Complete 29 semester hours or more of college level course work

  • Obtain and document passing scores on the Illinois Test of Basic Skills

  • Establish a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.65/4.0 or higher (transfer students may use a transfer GPA for the purpose of selection if the complete items 1-3 above no later than 30 days after initial enrollment at EIU.

For purposes of selection, a community college or transfer institution cumulative GPA based on a minimum of 29 s.h. of college level course work may be considered if they complete and document items 1-3 above no later than 30 days after initial enrollment at EIU. Forms to request to use a transfer GPA for the purpose of selection are available at the University Admission to Teacher Education Meeting. Students transferring to EIU must attend the University Admission to Teacher Education Meeting within the first 30 days of initial enrollment at EIU.

For undergraduate transfer students, once 12 hours are earned at EIU, the EIU cumulative GPA is the one used for selection and retention. Transfer students may attend the University Admission to Teacher Education Meeting prior to starting coursework if they wish.

Students must complete all the criteria for University Approval to Take Teacher Education Courses (including Selection) in order to begin the sequence of professional education courses. The criteria are:

  • Apply and be selected.

  • Submit a letter of intent to Office of the Dean, College of Education and Professional Studies.

  • Establish and maintain a cumulative GPA 2.65/4.0.

  • Complete Speech and Hearing Clearance. Phone (217) 581-2712, Speech, Language, Hearing Clinic for appointment. ($5 fee)

  • Documented “C” or better in communications, math and other specified preparatory courses.

  • Complete the first required Criminal Background Investigation ($15 fee).

  • Document successful completion of the Technology Proficiency.


Early Childhood—(birth to grade 3)
General Ed. courses to be taken while completing A.A./A.S./IAI

  • COM-101*, COM-102*, and COM-103*; MTH-121 and MTH-122*; BIO-112; PSC-110; HIS-201; *PSY-105*

  • (1) course from: CHM-111, CHM-131, PHY-106 and 107, PHY-150

  • (1) course from: any IAI physical science (two physical sciences required by EIU)

  • (1) course from: LIT-213, LIT-214, LIT-215 or LIT-216, LIT-217, LIT-218, LIT-219, LIT-220, LIT-221, LIT-222, LIT-223, LIT-224, LIT-225, or LIT-226

  • (1) course from: an IAI approved humanities course

  • (1) course from: ART-110, ART-205, ART-206, ART-209; MUS-106, MUS-107

  • (1) courses from: any IAI Social and Behavioral ScienceInclude a course from: (meets the cultural diversity requirement): ANT-202; GEO-101, GEO-201; HIS-210, HIS-215, HIS-220, PSC-210, PSC-225.
    * denotes a grade of ”C” or better required

Courses to be taken from chosen track:

  • Early Childhood Education—Child and Family Studies
    Consult an EIU advisor for suggested concentration courses.

  • Early Childhood Education—Special Education
    Moraine Valley currently does not have any equivalent course in the special education department. The special education courses will be taken at EIU upon transferring.


Elementary and Middle School Ed.—(K-9)
General Ed. courses to be taken while completing A.A./A.S./IAI

  • COM-101*, COM-102*, and COM-103*; MTH-121 and MTH-122*; BIO-112; PSC-110; HIS-201; *PSY-105*; *EDU-100

    General Option, 15 s.h. are required in Area of Concentration (6 hours to be taken at the upper division level at EIU):

  • Middle School—For the Middle School Option
    18 s.h. are required in Area of Concentration (6 hours to be taken at at the upper division level at EIU):

Special Education Major
