Moraine Valley's Student Support Services
program is committed to providing services to help you achieve your academic
goals. Together with an educational case manager, you
willl develop a plan for completing your degree
and transferring to the four-year institution of your choice. Services we offer:

Student computer lab. |
College-101 Support
All of the professional staff members of the TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS)
program have experience teaching College-101 and can help if you have
questions about assignments. Remember, you must
complete both the educational planning assignment and the final paper in
College-101 to pass the course. Please see an SSS staff member if you need help
with these assignments in particular. You may call Beverly Behland at (708)
974-5648 or e-mail
behland@morainevalley.edu to make an appointment with a staff member.
The SSS program can help you successfully
complete the College-101 course the first time you take it. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about the course or need additional
assistance.
Computer Lab and Technological
Assistance
The Student Support Services office is equipped with a computer lab dedicated
for the use of TRIO/SSS participants. The lab contains five state-of-the-art
computers along with scanners, and printers. All
printing is free in the computer lab.
The office also provides additional
technological equipment to students for class projects and assignments. The
equipment includes: a camcorder with tripod, digital camera, TV/VCR/DVD
combination, portable radio/CD/cassette tape combination with headphones, and
calculators.
The Student Support Services staff is available
to assist students with computers and other technological equipment. All
equipment is available for use during regular office hours. Please call (708)
974-5648 to talk with a staff member about the procedures to borrow our
technical equipment.
Resource Room
The Student Support Services program offers a Resource Room as a place for students to study, have a snack or
sit quietly and take a break. The Resource Room contains personal development
brochures on topics such as stress management, time management, increasing
self-esteem, and becoming more assertive.
Each January through March, cookies
and hot cocoa are served daily in the Resource Room to help students warm up
from the cold weather. Please feel free to stop in for treats.
The Resource Room is open and available to
students during our regular office hours.
Cultural Activities
The Student Support Services program offers students the
opportunity to attend cultural events and activities. Cultural activities are
offered in an effort to educate students about various racial/ethnic groups
including their traditional cuisine, religious traditions, art, music or other
aspects of culture. All cultural trips include lunch and transportation. Trips
are free for all TRIO/SSS participants.
Fall 2007 Cultural Trips
Join us Friday, Sept. 14, for a Chicago River Architecture Tour. We
will set sail on the Chicago River to learn more about Chicago’s architectural
heritage, which is considered to be among the finest in the world. The boat
leaves from the Wrigley Building in downtown Chicago. See fliers in the TRIO/SSS

Spring Break 2008

Irish American Heritage Center, Chicago: Join us for a tour of the museum, art
gallery and library of this facility established to educate the public about
Irish heritage. Lunch at McNamara’s, an authentic Irish eatery will be
included. Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, Chicago: Come and learn
more about the Italian American heritage, culture and sports heroes by
touring the Tommy and Jo Lasorda Exhibit Gallery. Lunch will follow at
Pompei, an Italian restaurant. Thursday, March 3, 2008. |

The Spertus Museum at the Spertus Institute of
Jewish Studies, Chicago: The Spertus Institute will celebrate the opening of its
new facility, including the Spertus Museum in November 2007. The museum staff
has prepared new exhibitions to educate the public about the religious and
intellectual traditions of Judaism. Come and explore exhibits of Jewish
expression and learn more about the Jewish experience. Lunch will follow at the
facility’s new kosher Wolfgang Puck Café. Tuesday, March 11, 2008.
Tours to Colleges and
Universities
Fall 2007
Join us for the Transfer Student Preview Day at the University of Illinois
at Chicago (UIC) to learn more about the university. You will have an opportunity to meet with a
representative from your academic area of interest, learn more about financial
aid, admissions, and housing, talk with current UIC students, and take a campus
tour. Watch the bulletin boards in the SSS Office for more information or call

Spring Break 2008
Each year during Spring Break, the TRIO/SSS program takes students to visit
at least one college or university. This year we are giving students the chance
to choose the four-year school we visit during Spring Break! Stop by the SSS
Office (U204) to cast your vote in the box marked “Spring Break College Tour”.In January 2008, we will announce the college
that has been selected and you will have an opportunity to sign-up to take the
tour with us.

Workshops
Fall 2007
This Fall we will offer the following workshops:
“What Every Student should Know about
Financial Aid”
Wed./Thurs. Oct. 3-4
Learn more about the Standards of Academic Progress (SOAP), which you must
maintain to avoid losing your financial aid award. Also learn how to find
scholarships and grants to fund your education.
“Transferring to a four-year School”
Tues./Wed. Oct. 23-24
This workshop will detail information about the transfer application process,
including how and when to begin it. You will also learn about how your SSS
educational case manager can help you prepare a stellar application!
“Conquering Test Anxiety”
Tues./Wed. Sept. 25-26
A little nervousness when taking an exam can be helpful. It can help you
stay alert so that you can perform well. But when tests make you so nervous that
your test scores are affected for the worse, it’s time to seek help. Come talk
to the experts from the Academic Skills Center who will co-facilitate this
workshop along with an SSS staff member. They will provide you with information
that could get you on the path to academic success!
