How and what can you recycle?
ALL-IN-ONE-BIN
It's easy to be green with the college's All-in-One Bin Single Stream Program that uses bins marked
"Recyclables" and "Landfill."
Recyclables---blue bin can accept:
- Newspaper
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Magazines
- Glass
- Metals (Aluminum, Tin, metal combo materials)
- Plastic #s 1-5 and 7
Recycling Tips
- Not certain? Recycle it.
- Take caps off cans and bottles.
- Rinse dirty containers.
- Scrap paper is acceptable.
- Soiled paper products are not recyclable and go in the landfill bin.
Frito-Lay Chip Bags and Batteries - Drop in specially marked boxes in the Library, cafe Moraine and Bookstore. Batteries can be rechargeable, AAA, AA, D, C and all other dry-cell. If you'd like to sponsor a box in your department for the collection of chip bags or batteries, contact Stephenie Presseller at (708) 974-5412, via email sustainability@morainevalley.edu or stop by Building L, Room L242.
Cellphones - Collected by the Combat to College organization. Drop off in specially marked boxes in the Student Union.
Other e-waste - Faculty and staff should contact the Help Desk for further information on disposing of computers, monitors and other electronic components. At this time, there is no on-site collection for e-waste. Visit http://www.earth911.org to find a local drop-off site to recycle your computer, iPod, MP3 player, printer, monitor, television, and more.
Batteries, CFL lightbulbs, paint, oil and car fluids, cleaners and electronics should never be sent to a landfill. Heavy metals and toxic chemicals in these items if leached into the water supply can cause serious health risks.

-
Determine types of waste to be recycled
-
Find local recycling companies- some waste haulers do provide recycling
-
Educate participants on what can and cannot be recycled
-
Track and celebrate the program's success
-
Purchase items that are recyclable and that have a recycled material content
If you have curbside pickup, but need a bin or have questions, contact your village or city hall or visit their website.
If you live in an apartment or neighborhood without a recycling program, visit http://earth911.org to find a drop-off center in your neighborhood. You also can contact your apartment manager or neighborhood council to ask about starting a recycling program.

All other trash goes in the landfill bin.
A landfill, also known as a dump, is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest and most common form of organized waste disposal in many places around the world. Most items are permanently buried at this location. Because of the concern for potential harm to the environment, federal guidelines have been imposed to regulate the use of the landfills.
