What can you do with a degree in education?
A degree in education can open doors for you to work in numerous industries. Careers range from elementary or secondary education teacher to an online learning educator. Plus, there are many opportunities in outside agencies.

  • Paraprofessional Educator Certificate

  • A.A.T. in Elementary Education

      • Elementary Education
      • Secondary Education
      • Music Education
      • Art Education

The Paraprofessional Educator Program at Moraine Valley Community College prepares you for a career as a paraprofessional educator (teacher’s aide) in regular and special education classes in elementary education, as well as secondary education schools and social service agencies.

Whichever degree or certificate program you choose at Moraine Valley, you will receive a strong foundation in education through classroom work and observation in the field. You’ll have the opportunity to observe and participate in actual public school classrooms, so you can benefit from actual hands on experience.

The Moraine Valley Education Department has a strong belief that our students should be able to use and integrate the technology that is found in current elementary and secondary classes today. To that end, we have one classroom that is entirely devoted to our education classes. We are the only community college that has a smart board in their education classroom for students to work with and learn how to create lessons. In addition, we have computers that students can work on either for individual or group projects. This “education classroom” is equipped with all types of manipulatives and learning stations for hands-on activities to give the look and feel of an elementary school classroom, as well as allow students to get the feel of what teaching or working in a classroom would be like.

This classroom is one of only a few Illinois community college classrooms that integrates smart board technology into a department’s curriculum. Teachers all over the world use smart boards in their classrooms to transfer teaching into learning. The Education department believes our students should be able to replicate the technology that they will ultimately use in their own future classrooms. The Education room is the only classroom at Moraine Valley that has a smart board in it and this allows its teachers to bring more collaboration and interactivity into their classes.

Basic Skills Test
The state of Illinois requires passage of the Basic Skills test for initial certification as a teacher in Illinois. To help students pass this test, the Illinois Basic Skills Online Study Guide was developed.

Developed based on materials created by a consortium of Illinois community colleges, including Moraine Valley Community College, Harper College, Illinois Valley Community College, Kishwaukee Community College, Prairie State College and Truman College, this study guide helps students become familiar with the Illinois Learning Standards and develop the competencies necessary to successfully pass the Basic Skills test.

The study guide is broken into 18 different lessons, one lesson for each standard. Each lesson provides students with detailed information about each standard and learning activity that will reinforce the concepts being presented. In addition, there are learning reviews and a post test which closely resembles the Basic Skills test.

After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Identify all 18 standards
  • Identify requirements for successfully passing the basic skills test
  • Assess your test preparation skills
  • Identify key strategies for successful test preparation
  • Develop a plan of action for preparing for the Basic Skills Test

To register for the online study guide, visit www.basicskillsprep.org. The Institution passcode is 333QJ176FI.
