Will Phi Theta Kappa membership help with transferring to a senior college?

Phi Theta Kappa is nationally recognized and senior colleges throughout the United States actively recruit members.  Upon induction, your name is placed in a database that is provided for senior colleges who are interested in recruiting these highly motivated student leaders.  In addition, members who participate in our chapter activities gain valuable leadership and community service experience that is extremely valuable when completing transfer scholarship and senior institution applications.

Why should I become a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for Two-year Colleges?

  • Members of Phi Theta Kappa may take advantage of a variety of transfer scholarship opportunities open only to members.
  • Members of Phi Theta Kappa may apply for more than $35 million in transfer scholarships, provided exclusively to Society members by more than 600 senior institutions.

What are the fees for joining the Alpha Iota Lambda Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa?

Membership fees are $70 ($45 for International fees, $10 for regional fees, and $15 for chapter fees).  This is a one-time fee paid before you are inducted into the society.

What are some of the other benefits of joining?

One major benefit is the friendships and future business networks that you build – on campus and internationally within the organization.  Scholarships, recognition, opportunities to travel, leadership opportunities, service activities, and scholarly fellowship are all part of being a member.  Active participation will be rewarded with letters of recognition and prize incentives at the end of the year.  Graduating Phi Theta Kappans wear the society stole and are identified on the program, on their diplomas, and on their transcripts as members.  (Students requesting copies of their official transcript must indicate on their transcript request form for their Phi Theta Kappa membership to be officially noted on the transcript.)

Are scholarship opportunities available to Phi Theta Kappa members?

YES! More than 600 senior institutions in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, provide approximately $35 million in scholarships exclusively to Phi Theta Kappa members. The Guistwhite Scholarship program awards to winning members ten $5,000 and ten $1,000 stipends for completion of baccalaureate studies. Scholarships are also awarded through the ALL-USA and All-State Academic Teams to members selected.  International officers receive $2,000 upon completion of their terms of office and thirty students receive $250 each from the National Deans List. The Leaders of Promise Scholarships are awarded to 30 finalists each year totaling $30,000. Finally, Phi Theta Kappa presents students one $1,000 and four $500 awards for winning writings appearing in the Society's honors anthology, Nota Bene.

What type of activities does the Alpha Iota Lambda Chapter participate in?

All of the activities that the chapter participates focus on the four hallmarks of the society (leadership, service, fellowship and scholarship), the current Honors Study Topic, and the current International Service Program.  Fundraisers are also scheduled.  In addition to local chapter activities, our members also participate in activities on the regional and international levels.

When does the Alpha Iota Lambda Chapter hold its chapter meetings?

Meeting times are determined by our executive board.

What is Membership?

Membership encourages and rewards student member participation in chapter activities.  This program provides chapters the opportunity to extend invitations of membership to deserving community college students based on scholastic achievement rather than participation in chapter activities.  At the same time, the program provides special incentives for students to participate in the many programming opportunities provided by Phi Theta Kappa.

What are the participation requirements for Membership?

Members commit to participating in at least one Phi Theta Kappa sponsored activity that promotes our four hallmarks (leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service).  Each individual member makes his or her activity choices.
