Krista Meyers, of Palos Park, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation at Moraine Valley Community College’s June Board of Trustees meeting for winning the college’s 2009 Student Essay Contest. Meyers also received 12 free hours of tuition at Moraine Valley, and her essay was entered into the statewide Paul Simon Essay Contest sponsored by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.
Students were asked to write a 500-word essay on “How My Community College Changed My Life.” Meyers’ essay was selected as the winner because it portrayed the vital role the community college plays in opening doors of change for students of all ages and circumstances. Meyers enrolled in Moraine Valley at the age of 38 after her husband died from cancer. She wrote that Moraine Valley has given her opportunities to shine, including writing for the college’s monthly “Meet Our Students” journal on the its Web site, being featured in the college’s “Representing the Non-Traditional Students” advertising campaign, and writing and recording a public service announcement for a charity event. She is currently pursuing her dream of becoming an elementary education teacher, and she will be the first person in her family to graduate from college.
“Moraine Valley Community College has built my confidence, self-esteem, and has been my advocate every step of the way. After my world was shattered, MVCC helped me to pick up the pieces, one at a time, carefully repositioning, yet resculpting,” wrote Meyers.
