The Valley Learning Center at Moraine Valley Community College is the perfect place for kids ages 4 and up to have safe fun while exploring their educational and personal interests during the summer break from school. A wide range of hands-on classes and workshops are taught by state-certified instructors who do not give homework or grades. Sessions are generally four, six, or eight weeks and start at different times throughout the summer. Some classes require textbooks, which can be purchased in the Moraine Valley Bookstore in Building D. The cost of each workshop varies.
In addition to the usual math, science, writing, career exploration, personal interest, and eFun Academy classes, the Valley Learning Center has several new offerings this summer.
History classes are being offered for the first time, including Abraham Lincoln, Chicago History, Military History, and Native American Culture, where students will build model Indian villages and totems. Students also can enroll in Native American Arts and Crafts for more on using authentic designs, beading, lacing, and macramé to create dream catchers, earrings, belts and more.
Children can master super shortcut techniques involving addition, subtraction, fractions, squaring and multiplication in Speed Arithmetic or take Beginner Fractions to help end their struggle with fractions. Science lovers will “gush” over Volcanoes and Earthquakes, which offers eye-witness accounts of historic eruptions and quakes.
Beginning French speakers can take their skills to the next level with French for Middle/High Schoolers, a refresher course that also will discuss the French culture. Students in fourth and fifth grades can step into a world of fantasy in Folk and Fairy Tales, where they will take the journey from “Once Upon a Time” to “Happily Ever After” by creating art, learning about characters and exploring role playing.
Several new Lego robot computer classes are being offered for children ages 9-13, including Race Day: Pit Stop Experience, Galaxy Battle, and Medieval Quest: Knights, Castles, and Dragons. Other options include Robo Doctor: Operating Room Practice, Amazon: Save the Rainforest, Dinosaur Safari Park, Secret Agent: Clue Investigator, Eureka! Young Inventor, Polar Exploration: Ice Adventure, and Arr! Pirate Island. Registration for Valley Learning Center classes is underway. Students can register in person at the Admissions, Records and Registration Office, located in Building S on campus, 9000 W.
