The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has selected the Moraine Valley Community College Library as the recipient of its 2009 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for the community college category. The award, which also is sponsored by Blackwell’s Book Services, recognizes the staff of a community college library for programs that deliver exemplary services and resources to further the educational mission of the institution.
Moraine Valley’s Library was chosen for its creativity and innovation in meeting the needs of its constituents and for creating an environment that fosters numerous relationships with partners outside of those traditionally associated with libraries. Erika Linke, president of ACRL, and Mike Arnold, regional director of Blackwell’s Book Services, recognized the Library staff with a plaque and $3,000 on April 15.
According to Linke, Moraine Valley’s Library won for being student-centered, focusing on student success, creating programs and services that support building lifelong learners, and supporting in-person and distance learning through programs such as the One Book, One College program and the annual Library Summit. “It’s a great honor to bestow this award to Moraine Valley,” said Linke. “The staff take the message of community to heart and are all focused on creating a positive environment for students. They work together and share together to create a formidable team.”
Arnold echoed her sentiments, “You are among the best. To win this award, a library must have a deep collection, strong leadership, and a solid staff. I’ve seen all of this at the highest level here. I offer my hearty congratulations to Moraine Valley.”
Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, dean of Academic Development and Learning Resources, accepted the award on behalf of the Moraine Valley Library staff. “This is truly an honor for us. You can tell when people love where they work, and the work of my staff shows how much we love what we do. Everyone here is supportive of one another,” said Jenkins. The Library also will be recognized at the ACRL President’s Program during the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago this July.
