Moraine Valley Community College is hosting 5/8” Seam Allowance by artist Amanda Simons in the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery, in the Fine and Performing Arts Center, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills. The exhibit will run from September 21 to October 15. An artist’s reception will be held Thursday, September 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Art Gallery. The artist will speak at 3 p.m.
Simons’ artwork is an exploration of the legal and social struggles of lesbian domestic partnership in America and what that partnership means in the context of both heterosexual and homosexual communities. Her visually inviting, playful, and delicate work explores social constructions of femininity through clothing patterns, Plexiglas, and other mixed media.
“Because of the complex nature of struggles faced by the lesbian community, my message is best presented as a layering on concepts on a visual plane,” said Simons. “My art provides a needed exposure to the lesbian community and is a catalyst for conversation and change in America.”
Simons is a freelance painter and designer and works as the Webmaster and promotional material artist for LINK Community Arts in Flint, Michigan. She has a Bachelor of Art in English and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art in Painting from the University of Michigan-Flint. Her work has been featured at the State of Michigan House of Representatives and published as cover art through Palgrave Macmillan. She is an award-winning artist who has participated in several local group and solo exhibitions.
Moraine Valley’s Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery provides an opportunity to view locally and nationally recognized artists. Exhibits in the Art Gallery are free to the public and are available for viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as during most performances in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.
