Moraine Valley Community College’s 2009 fall semester set a record high enrollment with 19,071 students, exceeding the 19,000 mark for the second straight semester. The 162,766 credits hours also is at an all-time high.
“We are pleased that an increasing number of community members chose Moraine Valley this fall and that we continue to be their college of choice,” Dr. Vernon O. Crawley, college president, said. “We provide an accessible and affordable learning environment that promotes quality in education and outstanding service. We have an excellent faculty and staff whose top priority is student success.”
Students enrolled in the college transfer program make up 60 percent of the enrollment while career program students account for 33 percent. Forty-four percent of the students are enrolled full-time, an 18 percent increase over this past spring. Eighty-five percent of the students live within the college district.
Factors contributing to the high enrollment include the weak economy and job market. “Many of our community members are critically aware that they need a college education to give them a broader array of choices in their career fields and good paying jobs,” said Dr. Crawley. Also playing a key role, he said, is the increasing tuition costs at four-year private and public colleges and universities. “Our students know that they can receive a quality education at a much more affordable cost than at four-year institutions.”
