A Moraine Valley Community College student has won the Midwest Cooperative Education and Internship Association (MCEIA) 2009 Student Scholarship Award. Krystal McPherson, of Oak Lawn, will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a one-year membership to MCEIA.
McPherson, who also was the recipient of Moraine Valley Community College’s 2009 Intern of the Year Award, was selected for her work as a research specialist at Chicago-based Cintas, a world-wide uniform company, which distributes, cleans and maintains uniforms. In her position as an accounts receivable analyst, she worked with some of the company’s national accounts that have special billing requirements and major reconciling issues. She had the lead position on a large project in which she was required to present her progress to the management team weekly. She also analyzed financial data daily and created spreadsheets detailing the bad debt reserve for three divisions.
McPherson received praise from her manager at Cintas and her Moraine Valley business instructor. She was recognized for being dedicated and going above and beyond what was required on many projects. Sharon Senow, manager of the accounts receivable and credit department at Cintas, called McPherson’s work “impressive. She is valued in our organization.”
McPherson is grateful for the experience she has been afforded. “Without the internship program at Moraine Valley, I would have never had the opportunity to explore a different field of work, learn so much and expand my knowledge.
This experience has made me aware of the real importance of school and work and how it goes hand-in-hand. This has influenced me to continue my education with not only working toward a bachelor’s degree, but also shooting for a master’s degree. Moraine Valley has helped guide me in the position I am in and kept me on track.”
