Moraine Valley receives Arts Midwest Grant
9/1/2009

Moraine Valley Community College has received $2,900 in funding from Arts Midwest’s Performing Arts Fund to help support two upcoming performances specializing in dance, theater, music and family entertainment.

The Performing Arts Fund, which receives contributions from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, General Mills Foundation and Land O’Lakes Foundation, supports the touring of professional performing artists throughout Arts Midwest’s nine-state region. These engagements include public performances and in-depth educational activities reaching audiences that lack access to the performing arts.

“Arts Midwest is proud to support Moraine Valley Community College in their upcoming presentations of Spencers Theatre of Illusion and Broadway Revue in Color featuring Gordon Michaels,” said David J. Fraher, Arts Midwest executive director.  “In these economically trying times, arts events like these not only provide uplifting experiences for audiences, they also create meaningful jobs for those employed in the arts industry – thus amplifying the effectiveness of our funding,” he added.

Broadway Revue in Color, which will be in the Dorothy Menker Theater on January 16, 2010, features show stopping numbers from most of the well-known, traditional black musicals from Broadway. This Boston-based concert, featuring Gordon Michaels, is not only a tribute to the Broadway stage, but also to the contributions of black singers and songwriters.

The Spencers Theatre of Illusion production, which will be in the Dorothy Menker Theater on March 26, 2010, represents the artists’ love for theater and their passion for the art of illusion. The Spencers are the second largest touring illusion production in the nation.
Based in Minneapolis, Arts Midwest connects people throughout the Midwest and the world to meaningful arts opportunities, sharing creativity, knowledge, and understanding across boundaries. A non-profit regional arts organization, Arts Midwest serves audiences, arts organizations and artists throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and beyond. One of six non-profit regional arts organizations in the United States, Arts Midwest’s history spans more than 25 years.

The National Endowment for the Arts is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Endowment is the nation’s largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities and military bases.
