Dr. Vernon O. Crawley, president of Moraine Valley Community College, has been selected as the 2009 Chief Executive Officer of the Year for the Midwest Region by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). Dr. Crawley is also one of five regional finalists for the association’s national award to be named in October.
“I am extremely pleased with my selection. We have many, many outstanding community college leaders throughout the Midwest and nation, and to be selected to represent them this year is an honor,” said Dr. Crawley, who has served Moraine Valley with distinction since 1991 and the community college movement for nearly five decades.
Since coming to Moraine Valley, he has overseen tremendous growth on campus—in enrollment and physical plant. The college enrollment is at an all-time high with more than 19,000 students in the 2009 spring semester, and summer school enrollment also was at a record high. The community approved an $89 million bond referendum in 2006 that has resulted in an unprecedented campus expansion the likes of which haven’t been seen since the campus opened its first four permanent buildings in the early 1970s. Scheduled to open for the start of the fall semester this month is the Dr. Vernon O. Crawley Science Hall. The Moraine Business and Conference Center opened July 24 to host Governor Pat Quinn’s Sustainable University Symposium.
Dr. Crawley has served on numerous local, regional and national boards and has been a mentor and advisor to countless community college leaders. He is called upon to represent all community colleges before congressional and legislative bodies. “Even during this severe economic downturn, Dr. Crawley has kept the college fiscally strong. What is most telling about his relationship with the board is that he begins his 18th year as president of Moraine Valley, and we would like him to serve for another 18 years,” said Joseph Murphy, board chairman. “This honor is well-deserving. We are delighted with his selection.”
