One Book, One College focuses on Working by Studs Terkel
8/24/2009

Moraine Valley Community College’s 2009-10 One Book, One College program will focus on Working by Chicago icon Studs Terkel.

One Book, One College is an interdisciplinary, public program sponsored by the college’s Library and Bookstore to foster scholarly discussion among students, faculty, staff, and the public, centering on the themes of one book. All One Book, One College events are free, open to the public, and will be held in the Moraine Valley Library lounge, on campus, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills.

Working brings the reader up close and personal with the world of work. It has been said that when you spoke with Terkel, you just wanted to tell him everything, and that’s exactly what the people featured in this book did. From blue collar to white collar, from top to bottom of the totem pole, Terkel gives voice to the joy, the monotony and the frustration of work. This is the behind-the-scenes view of work that we don’t talk about.

As part of the One Book, One College program, Moraine Valley will host several  events during this academic year including:

Working: How Studs Terkel Inspired a Generation of Journalists
Wednesday, Sept. 16
12-1 p.m.

Thom Clark, president of the Community Media Workshop at Columbia College in Chicago, will present a lecture about Terkel’s life and influence. Clark, a community activist and radio and television host, has dedicated his life to carrying forward the legacy of Terkel by giving voice to the little guy, challenging media outlets to diversify their coverage, and exploring ramifications of new media on our society.

Ourselves & Our Work: How Our Jobs Make Us Who We Are
Thursday, October 22
1-2:15 p.m.

How does our work shape us? How do people around us view us based on the type of work we do? How do training and education in order to get work help to shape us? What motivates us to work? Just money? Or are there other reasons we work?
