Allan Vache presents A Benny Goodman Centennial Tribute, Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Moraine Valley Community College’s Dorothy Menker Theater, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills.
Benny Goodman’s clarinet helped define a whole new style of music in the 1930s: Swing. His classic recordings of popular songs and dance music, so powerful and exciting then, still captivate us today. This upbeat, toe-tapping show highlights a superb quintet featuring jazz singer Rebecca Kilgore’s exuberant vocals, the elegant stride mastery of pianist Phil Flanigan and the exciting, hot swing playing of acclaimed clarinetist Allan Vaché. Joined by two other musicians on bass and percussion, they spotlight the many great female vocalists who sang with the Goodman band (including Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Helen Ward, Martha Tilton, Mildred Bailey, Helen Forrest and Ella Fitzgerald), Teddy Wilson's unforgettable piano playing, Fletcher Henderson's inspired arrangements, and the evolution of Benny Goodman from sideman to Swing Era star.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for students. To order tickets, call or stop by the Moraine Valley Box Office at (708) 974-5500. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or visit the Moraine Valley Web site at www.morainevalley.edu/fpac.
