Annual Integration Bee
Official Rules

The Integration Bee contest consists of one practice round and three elimination rounds in which participants find antiderivatives of given functions. As the contest progresses, the functions increase in complexity. Random participant order will be determined ahead of time.

  • Practice Round: The Integration Bee will begin with a practice round in which each participant will be given the opportunity to warm up by evaluating one integral at the board in the allotted time of one minute. After each contestant has had the opportunity to try a practice integral at the board, the actual competition will officially begin with Round 1.
  • Round 1 (Single Elimination-Timed): This round will be timed and will begin with two participants working simultaneously at the board to evaluate one integral. The integrals will be different but comparable in difficulty. Participants who evaluate the integral correctly in the allotted time of two minutes will move on to Round 2. Those who do not will be eliminated from the competition. Round 1 will continue in this way until all original participants have tried one integral.
  • Round 2 (Single Elimination-Timed): This round features integrals of increased difficulty level and will operate in the same manner as Round 1. The round will repeat until 2-3 participants remain.
  • Round 3 (Lightning Round-Not Timed): In this round, the remaining 2-3 participants will work on integrals of the highest difficulty level. All participants will work on the same integral at the same time. The participant who correctly evaluates the integral fastest will earn one point. The first participant to earn three points will win the Integration Bee contest and be crowned the "Integration Champion".
  • Lifelines: In rounds 1 and 2, participants can refer to one “lifeline” in the audience for help. A lifeline can be any individual who is not participating in the contest, including designated Moraine Valley math instructors. The participant will go into the audience to confer with a lifeline, but may not write anything down during this conference. The clock keeps running during this time.

Special Prizes for 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place.
All participants who compete in the Integration Bee will also receive a prize.

Note to contestants:  PLEASE COME ABOUT 15 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE START OF THE BEE SO THAT YOU MAY GET A NAMETAG, MEET THE OTHER CONTESTANTS , . . .  THIS WILL ALSO ENSURE THAT THE BEE STARTS ON TIME.
