Welcome

The Liberal Arts Subdivision embraces the mission of the college of educating the whole person.  Through continuous program assessment and evaluation, it provides a strong foundation for transfer and career students, and offers opportunities for intellectual, social, artistic, multicultural, and technological achievement in a learning environment that provides respect and support for students.  It also serves as a resource for the cultural and artistic life of the college and community.

Jamie Callahan
“365 Day Self Portrait”

Jan. 9-Feb. 9
Reception: Thursday, Jan. 19, 2-4 p.m.
Building F, Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery

In July 2010 photographer Jamie Callahan began working on an intimate photographic exposé of himself in what was to become a 365-day visual blogging.

The artist explains, “this project is the first time I've ever turned the camera on myself. Normally I avoid photographing myself at all costs…so I decided to do something that would force me significantly out of my comfort zone. In many ways it proved to be an arduous and frustrating journey…I am now very well acquainted with all my blemishes and asymmetries!”

Come and meet the artist to ask him about his year-long adventure into such a familiar subject. Did he like what he saw?

Alex Hibbitts
“Neither Landscape Nor Architecture”
Feb. 13-March 8
Reception: Thursday, Feb. 16, 2-4 p.m.
Building F, Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery

Alex Hibbitt’s work is both ceramic and sculptural, object and installation. In her mixed media room-scapes, ceramic surfaces simulate the smooth screen of the computer monitor, and painted surfaces bounce back and forth between two and three dimensions. The use of light and Plexiglas furthers this dislocation through shadow and reflection, until what is created is something neither landscape nor architecture but a fusion into a new kind of aesthetic environment.
