International Student Responsibilities

Overview of  F-1 Visa International Student Responsibilities
All students issued the I-20 Form and granted permission into the United States on an F-1 non-immigrant student visa for enrollment at Moraine Valley Community College must understand and comply with the following policies and regulations while enrolled at the college.

  1. Maintain Full-Time Student Status. All international students are required to maintain full-time status and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours during the regular fall and spring academic semesters.

  2. Employment. International students are eligible to work in on-campus jobs up to 20 hours per week during the regular academic year, based on job availability. International students are not permitted to work in unauthorized employment off-campus. Authorization for off-campus employment is available only in special circumstances within regulations designated by the U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization.

  3. Tuition. International tuition and fees may be paid in cash, credit card, or certified bank check or travelers checks. Students must plan to pay tuition due during their first week on campus. Students who wish to participate in a payment plan may make four payments during the semester for an extra $20 fee. All tuition must be paid before the semester ends.

  4. Change of Address. Students are required to report all changes of address to the International Student Admissions Specialist within 10 days of moving.

  5. Travel Permission. Students who wish to depart for annual vacation must register for next semester and visit the International Student Affairs Office for re-entry permission.

  6. English Testing and Orientation. All new students are required to participate in comprehensive tests for English proficiency. English exam results are used for placement in the appropriate levels of English or other classes. All new students are required to attend International Student Orientation the week before classes begin.

  7. Registration. Until successful completion of composition (COM-101) is achieved, all international students must have their registration and course schedules reviewed and approved by the international student affairs staff.

  8. Insurance. Medical insurance is mandatory and required, as stated on the I-20 form, for all international students enrolled at the college. The college offers a group insurance policy which is added to the tuition bill at enrollment. Students who have adequate proof of their own insurance will be permitted to eliminate this fee.

  9. Academic Progress. Students who are notified of poor academic standing are required to meet with a counselor or designated staff regarding their progress. Students must make satisfactory progress toward their degree as defined by the college catalog.

  10. Housing Contracts/Agreements. Students must abide by housing agreements made between themselves and the host families, and with guidelines identified by the college. The college reserves the right to use disciplinary action in cases of severe violations.

All students are responsible to understand and comply with U.S. immigration, federal, state, and local laws, and college policies regarding international students.
