Local Apartment Information

The coordinator of International Student Housing can provide assistance and advice to students who are interested in independent living in a local apartment.  Apartment living has many advantages for students who wish to live on their own. However, it requires students to assume more initiative, responsibility and effort to coordinate furniture, items for daily living, cooking utensils, grocery shopping, and the many details of moving into an apartment.

If your housing application indicates you prefer an apartment, Moraine Valley offers students assistance in finding a local apartment.  Depending upon availability and the time your application is received, an apartment may be available immediately upon arrival. However, in most cases, it is necessary for you to live temporarily somewhere else while making your apartment arrangements.  Usually, new students need temporary placement in a host home. It is best to discuss your interests with us in more detail.

For assistance with local apartments, contact:
Office of International Student Affairs
Building U, Student Union, U211
Telephone: (708) 974-5756
Fax: (708) 974-0561

Why choose an apartment?
If you prefer a more independent living style, or if you prefer to live alone or to have a roommate of your choice, then it may be a good idea to live in an apartment.  Many apartments are conveniently located in the area.  Apartments can provide you a pleasant, safe, comfortable and convenient environment, and allow you more freedom to choose your lifestyle, habits, mealtimes, and other aspects of daily life.  Many apartments are located less than one mile from the college. You may walk or take public bus transportation.

There are, as we mentioned, challenges you must face when deciding to live in an apartment. Most apartments do not have furniture. Except for basic appliances such as a stove and refrigerator, you will need to provide and buy your own bed, table, chairs, and other items, which can be expensive. Students who choose to live in an apartment usually share a two-bedroom apartment with another student. Each student has a private bedroom, and shares a bathroom, kitchen, dining room and living room area of the apartment.

For Students Interested in Sharing Apartments
For your convenience and to assist students interested in local apartments, we maintain a "Roommates Registry" for students who are interested in sharing apartments. This is a good way to spend less money, and enjoy the company of another student. Please notify the Coordinator if you are interested in sharing an apartment. We will make every effort to help students find other students who wish to share an apartment and be a roommate.
