Which Course is Right For You?

Students may enroll in IMS programs with a variety of skills, work experience and educational backgrounds.  Beginning-level students with limited computing background should enroll in IMS-100, Personal Computer Basics, before pursuing an MIS or OSA program. Complete this survey to help you decide if IMS-100 is appropriate for you.

MIS 108, Internet Basics is designed to familiarize students with the Internet. New to email and the Internet? Looking to add some tips and tricks to your email and Internet skill set? Then this course may be for you. Students learn how to connect to the Internet, use email, effectively search the World Wide Wed, customize browser settings, implement virus protection strategies and security issues and more. Students with little or no previous computer experience are strongly encouraged to enroll in IMS-100 prior to, or concurrent with, this course. IMS-115, Introduction to PC Applications is required in most OSA programs. This is an introductory-level course in which students learn the fundamentals of word processing, electronic spreadsheets, database management, and presentation graphics software. Currently the Microsoft Office 2003 Suite is utilized in this course.  Students with little or no computer experience are encouraged to enroll in IMS-100 prior to or concurrent with enrollment in IMS-115. Complete this survey to help you decide if this course is appropriate for you.

IMS-101, Introduction to Computer Systems is required in many of the MIS programs. Topics include terminology, information management, business concepts, hardware, software, utilities and operating systems software, data communications, and systems analysis and design concepts and techniques. Students are introduced to the elements of computer applications—word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentation graphics—as well as the Internet. Students with little or no computer experience are encouraged to enroll in IMS-100 prior to or concurrent with enrollment in IMS-101. Complete this survey to help you decide if this course is appropriate for you.

MIS-111, Internet Technologies is designed for students who are expecting to enter the information technology field, or for non-technical professionals who are pursuing related careers such as the business, sales and marketing of Internet solutions. This course prepares students for an Internet technology certification exam (CompTIA i-Net+). A wide range of material is covered about the Internet, from using the Internet to demonstrating how the Internet works, using various Internet protocols, programming on the Internet, the Internet infrastructure, security, and e-commerce. Complete this survey to help you decide if this course is appropriate for you.
