Message from Moraine Valley President

Dear Friends of Moraine Valley Community College,

I am so proud of all of the wonderful things that happen here at the college each day. We are in the business of helping people transform their lives through education. Our students come to us to pursue new careers, augment job skills for their current position, attain degrees and certificates for their professional success and personal pride, and expand their minds and lives by learning new things and meeting new people.

In the past few years, however, we have experienced a serious decline in the funding we receive from the state. Like many of our students, we are facing financial challenges. And like them, we have continued to accomplish great things in spite of these challenges. But it has become more difficult, and for this reason, the Moraine Valley Foundation began its first major fundraising campaign—Foundation for Success: Transforming Lives at Moraine Valley.

The campaign already has raised more than $2 million dollars that will be used for college and community programs, scholarships, and other financial assistance to help our students fulfill their goals of completing a college education. This is a wonderful start, and I know we are well on our way of achieving our total campaign goal of $3.5 million.

I am truly humbled by the generosity of all of our donors, and I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the campaign. If you have not yet made a donation, I ask you to consider how every donation can make a difference for our students and community. With your help, we can continue changing lives for a changing world.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sylvia M. Jenkins
President
Moraine Valley Community College

Case Statement Summary

Students look to Moraine Valley Community College to provide a foundation for their success, whether they are preparing for a specific career or pursuing a four-year degree. Business owners work with Moraine Valley to train talented employees. Residents, young and old, take advantage of the college’s noncredit courses and cultural offerings, and the entire district benefits from Moraine Valley’s $18 million economic impact and its work to strengthen the tax base through education and business development.

Donors to the Moraine Valley Community College Foundation have helped shape the college into what it is today—a place that values student success, provides an affordable education, promotes economic development and invests in innovative programs. Now donors have a new opportunity to shape the college’s future through the Foundation for Success: Transforming Lives at Moraine Valley campaign, a $3.5 million campaign.

Why is This Campaign Important Now?

  • State funding and local tax revenues—two key income sources for Moraine Valley—have fallen in recent years, putting increasing pressure on the college to increase tuition. The college is committed to providing an affordable education, and its leaders have been careful to minimize tuition increases as other revenue has decreased. But state and local revenues are not the only alternatives to tuition. Through the Foundation for Success: Transforming Lives at Moraine Valley campaign, donors to the Foundation help offset tuition increases and protect educational access directly by providing scholarships and other financial aid.
  • Moraine Valley recently upgraded and expanded its facilities. The next step is to ensure the new classrooms and labs can continue to be supported with modern tools and technology, and that the faculty continues to develop by providing faculty development. These steps ensure that extra margin of excellence that is synonymous with Moraine Valley Community College.

What Can Donors Support?

Leaders at the Moraine Valley Community College Foundation have identified several key priorities to advance the college’s role in educating students and promoting the district’s economic development. Through the Foundation for Success: Transforming Lives at Moraine Valley campaign, donors have the opportunity to support the following priorities:

  • Increase the availability of need- and merit-based scholarships, as well as emergency funding
  •  Provide equipment, technology and classroom renovations for career programs
  •  Sustain the Annual Giving Program that funds the areas of greatest need
  •  Fund professional development grants to faculty for ongoing innovation in academics
  •  Support the new Health Education and Wellness Center on the Palos Hills campus

The Moraine Valley Foundation welcomes the opportunity to discuss other priorities and will work closely with all donors to ensure that their investments are appropriately recognized and utilized in accordance with their intent.

The Moraine Valley Foundation invites you to become a partner in this exciting endeavor to bring the college to a new level of excellence and create a brighter future for the entire community.
