Veterans' Benefits

Veteran Student Enrollment Checklist

STEP 1
Apply For Veteran Educational Benefits

_____ Apply for veteran benefits 12 weeks prior to registration OR be prepared to make a payment at time of registration according to college policy. See www.morainevalley.edu/admiss/tuition.html or college catalog. Once MVCC receives payment from VA, you may be reimbursed.

_____ Apply for GI Bill benefits online at www.gibill.va.gov. In order to register for classes, all students using GI Bill, including dependents, must attend a mandatory Veteran’s Orientation. Please contact New Student Retention, S216, (708) 974-5277 for scheduling. Rules and regulations as described in the GI Bill related to a college major plan and course selection will be discussed. This session will help ensure the student is planning to register for courses which are consistent with educational and career goals. Bring a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility, DD214-Member 4 copy and any previous college transcripts to this meeting. Students who have previously attended a session must meet with an academic advisor each semester before registering. Recipients must maintain good academic standing, as stated in the college catalog.

_____ Chapter 35, Survivors and Dependents: You must have VA file number in order to be certified. Contact the VA for this information.

_____ Apply for Illinois Veterans' Grant (IVG) if not 100% eligible for the Post 911 GI Bill and if you are a veteran with an honorable discharge, served at least one year of active duty, and entered and returned to Illinois within six months of service. The grant offers veterans 120 units to cover tuition and certain fees. The student is responsible for class fees and books. Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better for continued eligibility. Submit an IVG application to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Applications available at www.collegezone.com/media/F103_E_IVG.pdf When you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, bring it to the Cashier’s Office, S105.

_____ Apply for Illinois National Guard Grant (ING). Eligible students must be an Illinois National Guard member and have served at least one year in the Illinois National Guard. Qualifying students must submit a completed ING application online to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission every year to receive their Letter of Eligibility. A copy of this letter should be submitted to the Financial Aid Office, S107, at the start of every academic year. Applications are available at www.collegezone.com/12523.htm. Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better for continued eligibility.

STEP 2

_____ Three Ways to Apply for Admission to Moraine Valley Community College

  • Enroll online at www.morainevalley.edu

  • In person at Registration, Student Services Center, Bldg. S, Room S103.

  • Call (708) 974-2110.

STEP 3

_____ Transcripts, Records Office - Bldg. S, Room S111
Contact all previous colleges/universities attended and have official transcripts sent to MVCC Records Office (708) 974- 5730. Attach a completed Transcript Evaluation Form.

 

STEP 4

_____ Placement Tests, Bldg. B, Room B101 (walk-in basis)
Take Compass placement tests which assesses current level of readiness for college-level Reading, English and Math. Students may be exempt from all or partial testing based on prior college credit or if they have scored a 20 or higher on the ACT Math, Reading or English portion. Provide a picture ID to take the test. A fee will be added to your tuition balance. Test review is available at www.act.org/compass (708) 974-5309 or www.morainevalley.edu/testingcenter.

Placement Test Exemptions - Previously Earned College Credit
If you’ve previously earned college credit, you may be exempt from some or all of the placement tests. Submit a college transcript or grade report showing a “C” or better in a college level (101 or higher) English composition/rhetoric course and/or mathematics course to the Office of New Student Retention or Academic Advising in the Student Services Center (Building S).
 

STEP 5

_____ Academic Advising, Bldg. S, Room S201
First time GI Bill benefit users will need to attend a Mandatory Veteran’s Orientation. Continuing students who have attended a Veteran’s Orientation session must meet with an academic advisor each semester prior to registering. The academic advisors will assist with course selections prior to registration. Information can be found at www.morainevalley.edu/academicadvising, (708) 974-5721.
 

STEP 6

Once required documentation (DD214-Member 4 copy, Certificate of Eligibility, any previous college transcripts) has been brought to Academic Advising and the Semesterly Intake form and Veteran’s Registration form have been approved, there are three ways to register:

Please note the deadline for tuition payments is listed in Step 1. Veterans are encouraged to explore all options for assistance in pursuing their educational goals. If seeking additional financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Visit www.morainevally.edu/financialaid and www.fafsa.ed.gov for information and instructions.

Combat to College (C2C) – MVCC Student Veteran Organization

Bldg. U, Room U203
Combat to College helps Moraine Valley students (men and women) who currently serve, or who have ever served, in the United States military, transition to college life and establish a lifelong network of new friends and fellow veterans. The organization also strives to ensure every veteran is aware of any and all related benefits and services for which he or she may qualify. Monthly meetings are held in fall and spring semesters. Need help in choosing a career path or exploring educational goals? Counseling and Career Development provides personal, educational and career development services (708) 974-5722 or www.morainevalley.edu/counseling. Once you decide on a program, visit Academic Advising to choose classes.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Bldg. B, B260
CLEP is the accepted credit-by-exam program. Each 90-minute exam allows you to demonstrate your knowledge in many subjects. Register in person in the Academic Outreach office, (708) 974-5710. www.collegeboard.com/clep.
