Go Green
What
does it mean to “be green”? At the most basic level, being “green” means not
only considering the possible impact of our actions on the planet, but choosing
to act in a way that leaves the smallest footprint (i.e., the effect your
actions have on the planet). The green movement is not new, but global
awareness about green issues has risen to new heights.
Here at the Fine and Performing Arts Center, we are more
conscious of our impact on the environment. This effort includes a focus
on environmental concerns and issues pertaining to physical health and fair trade.
To that end:
- We have replaced all of our concessions
supplies with fully compostable materials and have purchased a composter.
- The coffee and tea we serve are organic
and purchased from fair-trade companies.
- Concessions snacks contain healthier
options and a focus on reduced packaging.
- In daily operations, we have shifted our
purchasing to focus on recycled and compostable products.
- We have instituted more aggressive
recycling programs for office paper, programs, staging supplies, glass,
cardboard, aluminum, and plastic.
- In the theater, we are beginning a
multiyear project to replace the lighting equipment with more
energy-efficient models. The subsequent reduction in energy use during
productions will eventually result in thousands of dollars of annual savings
to the college.
As always, thank you for your support of
Moraine Valley Community College and the Fine and Performing Arts Center. We
welcome your feedback and suggestions to improve our programming and to enhance
our efforts to become “more green.”
