Poissons de Chant (The Singing Fish)
Tom Lundquist

Aug. 16-Sept. 16
Reception: Thursday, August 26, 2-4 p.m.

The Fall season of exhibitions in the Robert F DeCaprio Art Gallery opens with the weird and wonderful “Poissons de Chant” - a series of prints illustrating the adventures of a mythical troupe of singing fish from Montreal. The fish and their escapades are the digital imaginings of California-based artist Tom Lundquist.

The 18 works in this exhibition were produced using digital modeling and digital painting techniques. Lundquist turned to computer imagery after spending much of his youth making elaborately detailed drawings. The ability to create much more complex images using technology was an "irresistible enticement," states Lundquist, "and I was willing to put aside traditional drawing values to do it."

In his intriguing picture-stories of the “Poissons” we find a cast of characters including production assistants, agents, accountants, and animal performers that work for the fish. The fish themselves are usually hidden in ingenious ways. Intriguing and amusing titles such as ‘Negotiating with Sheep’ and ‘The poissons push forward with their plan to rescue Rene Magritte’ pull us into a surreal and distorted fishbowl world. Layers of intricate detail invite the viewer to return again and again to try to fathom the mysteries of these charming visual puzzles.

The narrative that the prints illustrate doesn't in fact exist. Many people have urged Lundquist to write a story to go with the illustrations (there are 73 in the series, so far!), but the artist has replied that, "the only thing I really enjoy doing is making pictures." The viewer must concoct his or her own stories behind the singing fish from Montreal.

Tom Lundquist lives in Santa Monica, California, and is Professor of Drawing and Computer Graphics at Santa Monica College. His work has been shown throughout the United States.
