Meet the Staff

 

Sylvia Jenkins, PhD
Dean, Academic Development and Learning Resources

An employee of Moraine Valley since 1986, Sylvia serves as the dean of Academic Development and Learning Resources. Prior to holding this position, Sylvia served as a faculty member in the Library and department chair. This academic subdivision houses the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Library. The CTL serves all college employees through its professional development programs and services. The Office of Non-traditional Learning is also housed in the CTL and includes faculty and student support for all non-traditional course offerings.

Sylvia received the Master Teacher of the Year Award in 1991 and 1998, The Innovator of the Year Award in 2007, and the Vernon O. Crawley Leadership Award in 2007. She has served as the League of Innovation in the Community College Representative from Moraine Valley since 2006. Sylvia earned her Bachelor of Science  degree in English Education, Grambling State University, a Master’s in Library and Information Science, State University of New York at Albany, and  a Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies with a specialization in Community College Leadership, Colorado State University. 

Sylvia is responsible for planning and implementing programs and services offered in the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Library. She also serves on the Academic Affairs Dean’s Council and the Administrative Council.

Misha joined the CTL in May 2002  after completing an administrative internship with Dr. Vernon O. Crawley and the Executive Leadership Team of Moraine Valley.  She received  a doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in Community College Leadership, earned a Bachelor and Master's degree in Sociology and a second Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce.  Let Misha know about your workshop topics of interest and professional development needs.   

Misha’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Directing the CTL Professional Development Program; working closely with the Director of Faculty Development to design and provide learning opportunities to faculty 
  • Collaborating with faculty members to coordinate the New Full-Time Faculty Orientation Program 
  • Coordinating the New Staff Orientation and Mentorship Program 
  • Collaborate with other areas of the college to create professional development opportunities as needed

LaWanda Burrell-Love joined the CTL in January 2009.  LaWanda has a strong passion for learning and development and looks forward to assisting the faculty.  She has over 8 years training and development experience and served as an adjunct faculty member for two years at Nashville State Community College.

LaWanda received her Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Robert Morris College and her Master of Arts in Instructional Design from Roosevelt University.  She also holds MOS certificates in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 

LaWanda’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with faculty on the design and development of instruction.

  • Serving as a resource on best practices in the areas of design and development.

  • Conduct workshops for faculty that address their design and development needs.

  • Advocate awareness of student learning styles related to curriculum delivery and student success.

  • Promote activities to expose faculty to appropriate direct and indirect classroom assessment techniques.

Kristine Christensen, MBA, MS

Kristine began teaching web development and design, computer programming and e-commerce full-time in 2000 and joined the CTL staff as the director of Faculty Development in 2003. She is a full-time faculty member and maintains a full teaching load. In addition to her primary responsibility as chair of the Faculty Development committee, Kristine assists in the development of the CTL workshop brochure, sits on the Steering Team and Advisory Professional Development Team and has designed, developed and delivered various workshops for the CTL.

Kristine received the Professor of the Year award in 2004 and the Innovation of the Year Award in 2007 along with her colleagues who also serve on the MVLA steering team. She currently serves as a board member for the Chicago Area Faculty Development Network. Kristine holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and double majored in Human Resource Management and Industrial Psychology from Valparaiso University, an MBA with an emphasis in Consulting from Eastern Illinois University, a Master of Science in Management Information Systems with an emphasis in Electronic Commerce from Governors State University and is currently ABD as she finishes her Ph.D. in Community College Leadership from Old Dominion University.

Always happy to help in any way possible, Kristine can answer questions PGUs, funding for travel, or sabbatical requests as well as help you locate professional development opportunities. She also would like to hear your suggestions for future workshops and feedback about the current professional development programming for faculty.

Kristine’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Chairing the faculty development committee which consists of faculty representatives from all academic and student development subdivisions.
  • This committee is faculty-driven and responsible for:

    • Approving faculty travel requests, professional growth units and sabbatical requests.

    • Managing the selection process for the master teacher and professor of the year.

    • Providing feedback regarding the professional development opportunities and recommending workshop topics that can benefit the faculty body.

    • Assisting with the planning, development and facilitation of learning college day and faculty development days as well as the Faculty Recognition Reception.

  • Designing professional development opportunities for faculty.

Lisa has an Associate in Applied Science degree in Management Information Systems and Associate in Science in Computer Science from Moraine Valley. Lisa also received a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Applied Science from Governors State University and is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Teaching and Learning from the University of St. Francis.

Anthony joined the CTL in August 2008.   He has experience in teaching and training, along with working with higher education professionals.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching certificate in History from Montclair State University in New Jersey and a Master of Science in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Illinois University. 

Please contact Anthony if you have technology questions, or with ideas you have for implementing technology in the classroom.  Any idea, no matter how “outside the box” it may be, is always welcome.

Anthony’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Conduct technology training workshops and consultations
  • Research new technologies for potential adoption

Sue joined the CTL in September 2006. Sue is one of the secretaries supporting the CTL/library staff. 

Sue’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting faculty and staff and providing information regarding programs and services offered by the center and library
  • Helping to organize and plan faculty development days
  • Assisting faculty with professional growth units, travel authorizations and sabbatical requests
  • Helping plan and organize the new faculty orientation week
  • Scheduling of CTL facilities

Tracey joined the CTL in June 2008. She has over 10 years of teaching experience in higher education settings and experience in faculty development/training and higher education administration. Her areas of knowledge include instructional and learning strategies, academic success, technology integration, and online learning. Tracey is eager to work with you, so please call or stop by to share your ideas about how to improve teaching and learning using nontraditional delivery methods!

Tracey’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration with faculty and staff to support success with teaching and learning in nontraditional delivery formats, such as Internet courses, telecourses, accelerated courses, and other hybrid/distance learning formats.
  • Collaboration with faculty and staff to explore and implement methods of supporting student retention in nontraditional delivery formats.
  • Support of faculty in their efforts to explore flexible learning alternatives that meet the needs of our diverse student body.
