Blended Delivery and Nontraditional Face-to-Face Courses

In addition to Internet-based delivery modes, we also offer courses through mixed (or blended) delivery modes and accelerated formats, such as our Telecourses , 5- or 8-week FastTrack courses, and Weekend Courses. We also offer Independent Study.

These flexible learning options are designed to meet the needs of students whose schedules do not fit into traditional class times. Here at the CTL, we are prepared to offer support for faculty who teach through these deliver modes. Please read further to learn more about effective teaching through these nontraditional formats.

Overview of Blended Delivery
In blended courses, students experience face-to-face instruction, Internet-delivered instruction, and/or learn independently through audio-visuals to achieve course objectives. These options provide a flexible option for students who may not be available to come to campus during traditional class times. Our telecourses are one such form of blended course option, but we are in the process of developing other forms of blended courses.

Blended courses require less time in a face-to-face classroom setting on campus, but may require students to use the Internet or a local public library to access learning resources. To be successful in any nontraditional course, both faculty and student must commit to teaching and learning in an unorthodox way. This commitment usually requires initiative, dedication, and lots of time and effort for all involved.

Telecourses
Moraine Valley's telecourses allow students to learn through a combination of multimedia-based instruction and traditional classroom instruction. In telecourses, instructors require students to access videos and other course materials through the Internet, the campus library or a local library. These multimedia-based materials are the primary means by which students learn. Additionally, students interact with their instructor during five require face-to-face class meetings. These class meetings give students a chance to ask questions, get clarification, and discuss important concept and ideas with their instructor and other classmates. Telecourses are a form of hybrid course in which students that learn best from multimedia could excel at learning. Also, because there are only five required class meetings, successful telecourse students must be self-starters, disciplined, and organized.

Telecourse instructors should keep in mind that regular communication is important to keep students engaged and active in the course. The CTL offers training and resources for effective teaching and course design in hybrid modes. Please check out our resources and watch for announcements on upcoming training opportunities and availability of professional development resources. Below are some resources to get you started!

Independent Study
Independent Study courses allow students study the same course materials and complete the same assignments as a traditional course, but while working independently with faculty mentoring and guidance.

Fast Track/Weekend Courses
Accelerated courses are designed to meet the same course objectives as traditional courses, but over a shorter period of time than the 16-week semester. These courses tend to be rather intense and require dedication on the part of both student and faculty.
