Meeting Planner—About the Program

The Meeting Planner Program at Moraine Valley prepares you for a career as a meeting planner/special events coordinator.

What does a meeting planner do?
A meeting planner puts together annual meetings, special events and other functions handling all details from start to finish.

The curriculum has been designed by an advisory board of meeting/industry professionals specifically to give our graduates the necessary skills for entry-level positions. If you are considering transferring to a four-year college or university to obtain a bachelor's degree using the courses from this program, make an appointment with an academic advisor to review your options. Most people working in this field are college graduates.

Nature of Work
As a meeting/special events planner, you can choose to work for a:

  • corporation

Meeting Planning/Special Events Programs and Travel Program students (bottom row from left) Donna Mitsos, Eva Krzystyniak, Patrycia Wojewoda, (top row from left) Vicki Verwey, instructor Mary Beth Walsh, and Mariana Simental, recently traveled to Louisville as part of the classroom experience.

Who says learning only takes place in the classroom?
A group of Meeting Planning and Travel students and instructor Mary Beth Walsh recently visited Minneapolis, Minnesota, while another group headed south to Louisville, Kentucky.

The one-day site inspection in Minnesota included a whirlwind tour of hotels, attractions and the convention center, including the well-known Skywalk, Minneapolis skyway system, and the Mall of America. The students were guests of the Marriot Hotel in downtown Minneapolis for breakfast and a hotel tour, while the Convention Visitors Bureau also arranged for a tour of downtown Minneapolis.

The students who visited Louisville toured several beautiful accommodations, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Mohammed Ali Center, and the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is located at gate one of Churchill Downs. While at Churchill Downs, the students witnessed firsthand the historic highlights and event traditions surrounding the Kentucky Derby, and then were able to watch the last race, complete with colorful jockeys and fancy large-brimmed hats.

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.
