Degree and Certificate Programs and Courses
The Moraine Valley Education Center offers a
wide selection of courses for students who
plan to transfer to a four-year college or
university as well as career training
classes. In addition, Moraine Valley Community College offers all courses needed to complete the following programs in classes at the Blue Island Education Center (12940 S. Western Ave.) and at Eisenhower High School (12700 S. Sacramento, Blue Island).
Degree Programs
Business AdministrationDo you have management potential? Want to climb the corporate ladder? Gain new skills and prepare to enter the exciting field of management. This program can give you the skills you need to succeed in today's business world. Students in this program can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in business administration with a concentration in management. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students who want to enter management positions and enable those already in management to upgrade their skills and potential for growth. Courses include small business management, marketing, international business, human resources, and business presentations. An important feature of this program is the internship/seminar component that provides on-the-job training and offers students the opportunity to work in and evaluate a professional setting.
Criminal JusticeIf your career interests relate to the prevention and control of crime, Moraine Valley Community College's Criminal Justice Program offers the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level employment. You will gain a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system and processes, study the nature of and society's reaction to particular crimes, examine criminal law and learn about the development of the correctional system in America. The Associate in Applied Science degree is intended to lead to employment. If you are considering transferring to a four-year college or university to obtain a bachelor's degree using the courses from this program, make an appointment with an academic advisor to review your options. The optional internship program (CRJ-233/237) gives students the opportunity to learn firsthand how the justice system operates.
Certificate programs
Coding SpecialistPrepare for a career as a medical coder. Coders classify diagnoses and procedures into ICD-9-CM and CPT numerical formats used for reimbursement, data quality and medical research. Coders work in physicians' offices, billing companies, insurance companies and hospitals. Moraine Valley's 22-credit-hour Coding Specialist Program can prepare you to become a medical coding specialist. You will gain a working knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT classification systems, as well as basic health information management, insurance reimbursement and computer applications skills. Upon completion of the program, you will have the skills needed for entry-level coding positions and be eligible to sit for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
exam given by the American Health
Information Management Association.
Paraprofessional EducatorPrepare for a career as a paraprofessional educator (teacher's aide) in regular and special education classes in elementary as well as secondary schools, and in social agencies. Moraine Valley's program provides you with a strong foundation for a career in education through classroom work and observation in the field. This program offers an internship that allows you to gain valuable on-the-job experience to apply what you have learned in your courses. Clinical and observation sites are in the southwest suburban area, and the hours are flexible based on workable schedules between your busy life and the needs of the clinical site. Upon completion of the 31 credit-hour certificate program, you will receive the Illinois Teacher's Aide Certificate, in addition to a certificate from Moraine Valley. You are then qualified for teacher's aide or similar employment positions.
ReceptionistThis program prepares students for positions as receptionists and office assistants. Students learn proper techniques and procedures for greeting visitors, handling incoming calls, sorting and routing incoming materials, and performing general administrative duties. Filing, document formatting, and language skills are emphasized. |
