Women's
soccer team looks forward to next season
The women's soccer team is
focusing on next year after a rough 3-13-1 season, which ended with an 0-4 loss
in the first round of the Region IV Tournament.
"We certainly didn't finish where we wanted to
this year," said head coach Jim Knawa. "Despite our record, there were a lot of
positives that we can carry into the off-season and build on in 2008," he said.
First-year players Knawa hopes will return next
year include Michelle Burns (Sandburg), Jennifer Galvan (Richards), Meghan
Gierut (Sandburg), Daniela Gonzalez (Mirta Ramirez), Melissa Hernandez (Argo),
Shannon O'Shea (Mt. Assisi), Beatriz Parra (Argo), Ryan Quintos (Richards),
Naomii Rios (Oak Forest), Melissa Slomski (Andrew), and Nikki Stafford
(Eisenhower).
Earning post-season recognition for their
individual performances this year included second-team All-Region players Amy
Johnson (Shepard) and Parra. Johnson also earned a spot on the all-conference
team.

Preview
Cyclones ready for tough conference schedule
Moraine Valley's women's soccer team has set its sights high
for the 2007 season, despite returning only four players from last year's squad.
Head coach Jim Knawa believes that sophomores Heidi Brown (Andrew High School),
Kristyn Daly and Amy Johnson (both Shepard High School), and Ursula Radwanski (Reavis
High School) will be supported by an incoming class of talented freshmen.
First-year
players Knawa expects to immediately contribute include Michelle Burns, Julie
Drew and Melissa Slomski (all of Sandburg High School), Jen Galvan and Ryan
Quintos (both of Richards High School), Melissa Hernandez and Beatriz Parra
(both of Argo High School), Kristine Lyons (Tinley Park High School), Naomii
Rios (Oak Forest High School), Autumn Wagner (Shepard High School), Nikki
Stafford (Eisenhower High School), Meghan Gierut (Sandburg High School), Annie
Hurney (Hinsdale Central High School), Shannon O'Shea (Mt. Assisi High School),
and Daniella Gonzalez (Ramirez High School).
"This
year's team is looking to improve on its second place finishes from last year in
both conference and regional play," Knawa said. "Several of our freshmen were
all-conference players in high school, and their experience will be beneficial
this season.
"Our
schedule will be tough this year, but I feel we have the balance to compete
against anyone," Knawa continued. "The primary goal for this season is to win
the very competitive conference championship. Our midfield section is strong,
our defense and keepers have experience, and our forwards have some explosive
potential. Our success will depend on how well and how quickly this young group
can mesh together as a team in a very short pre-season time frame." |
