FAQs

What are telecourses?
Videotaped courses for busy students.

Telecourses are college credit courses designed by nationally recognized educators that cover most areas of the college curriculum. They include a textbook, study guide, detailed syllabus, and videotapes available in Moraine Valley's library and some area libraries.  A Telecourse is just a different way to take a class. Telecourses meet only five times a semester. You can think of the videotapes as replacements for the lectures you would receive in a regular class.

Who can register for a telecourse?
Students who are most successful in this type of course are those who:

  • are goal directed;
  • begin course activities early in the semester;
  • attend the telecourse's first class and other scheduled meetings;
  • keep in touch with their instructor;
  • read their syllabus thoroughly; and
  • set up a study program and adhere to it.

What type of classes are offered as telecourses?
Telecourses are available for college credit at Moraine Valley Community College in the following areas:

  • American government
  • Composition
  • Film
  • History
  • Geography
  • Philosophy
  • Psychology
  • Science
  • Sociology
  • Speech

Where do I get the videotapes?
Telecourse videotapes are available at Moraine Valley's Learning Resources Center and at these public libraries:

  • Alsip-Merrionette Park
  • Blue Island
  • Bridgeview
  • Justice
  • Orland Park
  • Prairie Trails (Burbank)

Videotapes for Telecourses at the Moraine Valley Education Center at Blue Island also are available at Calumet Park, Crestwood, and William Leonard Public Libraries, Robbins.

Videotapes for the Telecourses at Evergreen Park Extension Center are available at Evergreen Park Library, Alsip-Merrionette Park, and Blue Island Public Libraries.

Some videotapes also can be viewed on Channel 20.

Video rental and video streaming information is available at www.rmimedia.com or 1-800-745-5480.
The cost is $55.00 per course, plus shipping and handling for VHS, DVD and CD-ROM rentals (shipping & handling charge for one course is $15.00). Streaming media access is $35.00 per course.

Broadband connectivity such as DSL, cable modem, or wireless connection is necessary for video streaming.

Where do I get help?
Telecourse instructors have evening office hours every week and can be reached by telephone or e-mail for consultation. Program assistants also are available during the day and evening to answer questions. The office is located in B260, or call (708) 974-5710.

How do I register?
To register for a telecourse, call (708) 974-2110 (TT/TDD for hearing impaired 708-974-9556) or visit the Registration Office.  Registration also is available online by visiting https://webreg.morainevalley.edu. Telecourse registrants may pick up their syllabus a few weeks before classes begin. To preview a course syllabus you can go to our telecourse schedule and click on a course. Interested students may come to Alternative Learning in B260 to read a course syllabus and talk with a program assistant.
