In the past, if you were at least 25 years of
age attending college, working full- or part-time and more than likely raising a
family, you were considered a nontraditional student. Today, however, adult
learners actually are the new traditional student.
Why the shift? Adult learners realize the benefits associated with
furthering their education, such as:
obtaining skills to re-enter the
workforce
improving chances for
promotion
the self-satisfaction of earning a
degree or certificate
setting a good example
boosting self-confidence
the gratification of
lifelong learning.
You are not alone
At Moraine Valley Community College, more than 7,100 adults enroll in
credit and noncredit courses each semester, accounting for approximately
40 percent of all students enrolled in credit courses.
Add to that the thousands more who enroll in Adult Basic Education
(ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), General Educational
Development (GED), and career training, and you’ll see that plenty of
adults are on campus.
Adult learners bring rich life experiences, talents and diversity to the
classroom that add value to a college education. Equally as
important, adult learners are very comfortable at Moraine Valley. Our
faculty members understand the many responsibilities and obligations
adults have.
Starting college is a huge step—and we are here to help every step of
