Getting Started
Whether you're a full- or
part-time student, in just a few simple steps, you can be registered for classes
and on your way to an exciting academic career at Moraine Valley Community
College.
New Full-Time
Students
(12 or more credit hours during fall/spring, 6 or more credit hours during
summer)

Fill out enrollment form.
You may fill out the enrollment form online, call (708)
974-2110 or visit the Admissions Office in the Student Services
Center (Building S), Room S101.

Submit transcripts.
You must
submit an official high school transcript.
If you graduated from high school or passed the GED test
less than five years ago and have completed fewer than 15 hours of college
credit, submit either an official high school transcript that includes your
final grades and graduation date or the results of your GED test.
Each high school or college must mail the transcripts to Records Department,
S111, Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills, IL
60465-2478.

Take placement
tests. All new full-time students are required to take Math, English and Reading
Placement exams. Take placement exam or submit appropriate ACT scores (if
applicable). The student does not need to take the placement exam (COMPASS) if
the student scored a minimum of 20 in the English, Math and Reading sections on
the ACT. Scores must be submitted to the New Student Retention Office, Student
Services Center, (Building
S), Room S202. It is the student's responsibility to go to the Moraine
Valley walk-in Testing Center, located in Building B, Room B101. Students will
receive test results immediately after taking the exam. Call the Testing Center
at (708) 974-5309 for current testing hours. No appointment necessary.
There is an $8 fee, which is added to your tuition bill.
Placement Test Exemptions
It is recommended students review
www.act.org/compass to prepare for the placement exam. In addition, there is
a COMPASS study guide at the circulation desk in the library (Building L) and in
the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (Student Services Center, Building S,
S201). The placement exam
can be taken twice before registration for classes.

Attend orientation.
Orientation is mandatory for all new, full-time students. Students cannot
register until they have attended orientation. At orientation, students will
review their placement test results, as well as receive information on programs
and services, educational planning assistance and class scheduling.

Register for classes.
Registration for your first semester classes will occur during orientation.

New Part-Time
Students
(11 credit hours or less during fall/spring, 5 or less during summer)

tests.
You must complete placement tests in reading and writing before registering
for composition (COM-090 or COM-101) or before registering for your 12th
credit hour. You must complete a math placement test* before registering for

Attend an optional
new student information session.
This session will provide you with information regarding Moraine Valley's
programs and services, along with course selection assistance.

Register for classes.
You may register for classes in the Registration Office in the Student
Services Center (Building S), by calling (708)

this site if you have previously taken a noncredit course at Moraine
Valley.

Currently
Enrolled Students
As a returning student, you have the option of choosing one of three ways to
register for classes. You must pay all tuition and fees for the previous
semester before you may register for the next semester.

Placement Test Exemptions
Previously Earned College Credit
If you've previously earned college credit, you may be exempt from some or all
of the placement tests. Just submit a college transcript or grade report showing
a "C" or better in a college-level (101 or higher) English
composition/rhetoric course and/or mathematics course to the Office of New
Student Retention or Academic Advising in the Student Services Center (Building
S).
ACT Scores
An ACT score of 20 or above in English, reading and mathematics may be used in
place of some, or all of the placement tests. To be considered for an exemption,
full-time students must take their results to the Office of New Student
Retention. Part-time students need to present them to an academic advisor.
- A score of 20 or above in English and
reading exempts you from the English/reading placement test.
- A score of 20 or above in mathematics
exempts you from the mathematics placement test.

Apply for financial assistance.
If you
need financial assistance, stop by the Financial Aid Office in the Student Services
Center, (Building S), Room S107, or call (708) 974-5726. Assistance includes grants,
loans, work study and student employment, scholarships and more. Meet with a
financial aid staff member to determine your eligibility.
Order textbooks.
You can purchase your textbooks and school supplies at
the Bookstore located in Building D. Bring along your class schedule and school
ID. You also can check which books you need, get prices and
order your books online.
Obtain a student ID.
All students at Moraine Valley who are taking credit
courses are required to have a photo ID. Bring your current class schedule and a
picture ID (such as a driver's license, state ID or high school ID) to the Student Services
Center, Room S101. You will receive your ID immediately.
