Academic Advisors________________________

Lissette Alvarado, B.A., University of Illinois at Chicago
academic advisor
I began my career at Moraine Valley in 2003 with a personal approach to advising that has been a nurturing and realistic approach, giving students the necessary information so they may succeed academically. I give students information about their major, transfer institutions, assist them in monitoring their academic progress, create an academic plan as early as possible, and make student referrals as necessary.

Lisette serves as the liaison to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Illinois at Chicago and Lewis University.

Brenna Bosma-Krass, B.A., Hope College
academic advisor
I have a diverse background in higher education and have been actively involved in various aspects of student development since 2005. My approach to advising is a personal one and my goal is to help prepare students for their future academic or career goals. Every student and situation is unique, so I try to tailor my advising to meet each student’s specific goals.

Nina Carbone
, B.A., DePaul University
academic advisor
As a recent college graduate, I understand the importance of having a good advisor. My approach to advising is to understand and assist each student with their academic and career objectives. My expectation for students is that they will leave each of our appointments feeling more confident and one step closer to their goals.

Lisa Ferricks, B.A., Illinois State University
academic advisor

I started my career at Moraine Valley in 2001 and have been an academic advisor since 2003. I love it here! My approach to advising is very simple: treat each individual with patience and understanding. Each situation is unique; each student has a different story. That’s what makes advising so much fun! I love when I have worked with a brand new student or undecided major, and two years later am assisting them in completing their graduation petition! Then I know I have done a good job!

James Fleming, M.S.E., Northern Illinois University, M.S.E., Chicago State University
academic advisor

I joined Moraine Valley in June 2006 after leaving the College of DuPage where I also was an academic advisor. My personal approach to advising is to treat the student with respect by creating a friendly atmosphere. I strive to be nonjudgmental, while being a patient listener. My single most important priority is to assist students in becoming academically successful.

Communication, direction, and progress are the key components in reaching the students’ goals; which means equal effort by the advisor, support staff, and student. Working together as a team is a successful approach.

Kim Golk, B.S., Northern Illinois University
academic advisor

I joined the academic advising department in 2007 and have been at Moraine Valley since 2005. Working with the students is extremely rewarding. I look to the students to tell me about their goals and dreams. Then I help them filter through information and options so they can make decisions regarding their academic future.

Kim serves as the liaison to Northeastern University, Western Illinois University and Purdue University Calumet.

Jeremy Kingery, B.A., Governors State University
academic advisor
I joined the Moraine Valley academic advising team in August 2007. My background, prior to joining Moraine Valley, is in college admissions and student recruitment. I believe in first looking at the overall picture of what the student hopes to accomplish, and then provide information so the student can make informed decisions and develop an academic plan to achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals.

Jeremy serves as the liaison to St. Xavier University, Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois
-Edwardsville and Carbondale.

Sundus Madi, B.S., Northern Illinois University
academic advisor
I joined the academic advising team with Moraine Valley in August 2008. My background prior to Moraine Valley is in online education, admissions and academic advising. As a lifelong learner, I truly believe in the value of education and the impact it can make in a student’s life. To me, advising is about helping students evaluate their needs and giving them the tools to make well informed decisions.

“Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”
Malcolm Forbes (1919 - 1990), Forbes Magazine

Sundus serves as the liaison to Columbia College, Trinity Christian College and North Central College.

Maria Moreno, A.S., academic advisor
I started my employment with Moraine Valley in 1991 with an applied science degree in business and a customer service background. My mission is to provide students with pertinent information and much more. Moraine Valley students motivate me to give my best because they work so hard to pursue their dreams.

Mary Paraskis, B.A., Houston Baptist University
academic advisor
I worked at a four-year university where I assisted students with various academic needs. I feel strongly that a visit with an academic advisor can make a big difference in streamlining one's academic and career goals. As an academic advisor here at Moraine Valley, I look forward to meeting and answering any questions or concerns students may have as they work toward accomplishing their educational aspirations.

Ali Riphagen, B.A., Governors State University
academic advisor
I joined the Moraine Valley academic advising team in January 1995. My advising philosophy is teaching rather than prescribing. I believe in empowering my students by handing them the tools to achieve any educational goal they might want to pursue. I love what I do because I know that I can make a difference in a student’s life through my guidance and support.

Ali serves as the liaison to Governors State University, Illinois State University and DePaul University.

Sumeet Singh, B.S., Northern Illinois University
academic advisor
I have worked at various levels in the academic environment with an emphasis in student development and compliance. I want to help students formulate important questions about the nature and direction of their college education and help them find answers to those important questions. I like to guide students to better understand their educational needs and aspirations, as well as the resources available to them at Moraine Valley Community College. I want every single student that I advise to be responsible, productive, and a successful lifelong learner.

Sumeet serves as the liaison to Chicago State University, Northern Illinois University and Loyola University.
He is the academic advisor for the TRIO population.

Gloria Starkey, M.A., Saint Xavier University

I have been a member of Student Development serving students in various roles since 1994. Extending a welcoming, respectful experience and developing a connection with the student learners is important to me. Students are provided direction by utilizing academic Web site resources and data located in the Academic Advising Center. I recommend students communicate with an advisor each semester to stay on track toward educational goals. I enjoy interacting with the students and working with them to achieve their chosen academic and career goals.
