Timeline
1960s
Our rooms were filled with lava lamps
and our lapels with slogan buttons. We wore bell bottoms,
platforms, tie-dyed T-shirts, granny glasses, mini skirts and
go-go boots. Our hair was big—afros and bouffants. We played
with Barbie, G. I. Joe, Super Balls, Ouija boards, and
trolls. We listened to the Beatles and Motown on 45s and
LPs.

Our dashboard décor was a
swaying hula girl. We wore earth shoes, leisure suits, puka
shells and daisy dukes. And sometimes nothing as we streaked
across a field. We played with pet rocks, Pong, Star Wars
action figures, and Atari. We were busy “diggin’ it” and
“doin’ our own thang.” And, we listened to Free Bird on
8-tracks.

Our minivan had a “baby on
board” sign, and we were still cool. NOT!
We wore penny loafers, jelly shoes, friendship bracelets,
neon laces, and anything Don Johnson wore (or didn’t wear) on
Miami Vice. We helped Mario and Luigi earn coins. We played
with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pound Puppies, Cabbage
Patch Kids and Glo Worms. And, we danced to Michael Jackson
and Kenny Loggins on a boom box.

We were soccer moms carpooling
in our SUVs. We wore our hair like Rachel, wide-leg jeans,
Starter jackets, Zubaz, Reeboks with a pump, fanny packs, and
earrings in more than just our ears. We
played with Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo, Furby, Gigapets,
Koosh balls, and trivia games. And, we listened to the
Macarena and boy bands on CD players.

We’re digital and cell
savvy. We IM, text and TiVo. We survived Y2K. We
wear bling, pajama bottoms, Uggs, capri pants, clogs and
lower-back tattoos. We rally for a cause and wear every color rubber wristbands. We
play Texas Hold ‘em, Sudoku, Xbox 360, and fantasy football,
and watch life play out on reality shows. And, we listen to
Beyonce, Fergie and Kelly Clarkson on iPods.
