Internships
Internship Newsletter
Why should
I participate in the Internship Program?
Internships give students the opportunity to explore careers, make
valuable contacts, gain industry specific experience, and learn about themselves and the types of jobs that
are available. For an employer, it builds a potential employee pool,
gives access to additional staff during peak times, and the opportunity
to mentor a student. Internships can be paid or unpaid. What gives a
new college graduate an edge in the job market? Internship experience,
according to employers responding to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of
Colleges and Employers (NACE). (www.jobweb.com)
Employers taking part in NACE's Job
Outlook 2010 survey expressed a strong preference for candidates who had
taken part in an internship. (www.jobweb.com).

Moraine Valley
Intern Wins Scholarship
Congratulations to Elaine Connor, Moraine
Valley's Intern of the Year, for winning the Midwest Cooperative Education and
Internship Association 2011 Student Scholarship Award. The award will be
presented in October at the regional conference in Milwaukee, Wis.
2011 Intern of
the Year
Congratulations to Elaine Connor, 2011 Moraine Valley
Intern of the Year and all of the students nominated for this award.
The Job
Resource Center Internship Program at Moraine Valley presented Elaine
Conner with the Intern of the year award at the Fifth Annual Intern and
Employer Meeting and Awards Ceremony May 3.
Conner
started her internship in February 2011 in the Moraine Valley Community College
Child Care Center as an administrative assistant. Elaine Conner was nominated by
her supervisor and the director, Denise Lumpkin. Ms. Lumpkin reported that
during her first week as an intern, she created excel spreadsheets that allowed
the Child Care Department to eliminate many repetitive notes and checklists. She
created a document that could be used to track each child's attendance. In
addition, for the teaching staff, Elaine provided each with a classroom document
that provided a very detailed record of each child's schedule, something that
out current classroom software does not permit.
Elaine
successfully acquired enough information regarding the center's policies, that
the Director was confident her responses to various phone inquiries would be
accurate. Her presence in the center's reception area had a positive impact on
the center's image of a professional, safe and secure child care environment;
the vice president of Student Development, after visiting the center, spoke
highly of Elaine and was very impressed with her observation of Elaine's
performance.
Additional
nominees for the 2011 Intern of the year award include, Christina Dwan, Traub
Lieberman Straus and Shrewsberry; Melanie Eckberg, Moraine Valley IMS administrative
assistant; and Jackie Kleinick, administrative Intern, Palos Health and Fitness

2011 Internship Employer of the Year
The Job Resource Center Internship Program
awarded the 2011 Internship Employer of the Year Award to Tamima Farooqui,
Job Resource Specialist.
As an
internship employer at the Job Resource Center, Farooqui has had the honor of
working with student interns from Moraine Valley since 2009. She also has worked with other
graduate and bachelor-level students from other area universities.
The
interns, provided a great deal of support to the department, especially with career-related events such as
the community wide Mock Interview Days and Job and Internship Fairs-assisting
with logistics, planning, marketing and event-day coordination, as well as
building relationships with employers. They gained concrete skills in their area
of interest to help them take their career to the next level. In addition to
event planning, the interns learned about the Higher Education environment,
assisted with office duties, presentations, students outreach and promotion of
our department and events. The benefits of having an intern are multiple;
increased productivity with many daily tasks, provided fresh insight from
intern/student perspective, being engaged in teaching the interns improved
management skills and critical thinking skills, contributing to an intern's
learning goals ultimately strengthens the candidate pool, the community and
provides the student with valuable hands-on experience. For example, today, one
of the interns is now a colleague at the college.
Additional
nominated internship employers include Marianne Lambur,
Blue Cap Social Service Agency; and Bernadette Shanahan-Haas, Children's Museum
in Oak Lawn.
Marie
Harrell, Internship manager, thanks those who supported this awards program,
designed to honor Moraine Valley student interns for their outstanding
achievements and contributions to an internship site, and for employers who
participated and provided the learning opportunities for the students.
Congratulations to all nominees and recipients for their outstanding
achievements..
